UPDATE: Ryan Coogler has expressed his gratitude for the recent tribute to his film Sinners featured in the Halloween episode of Abbott Elementary. During a press conference held on October 30, 2023, show creator Quinta Brunson revealed that Coogler was “so flattered” by the homage, which highlights the film’s impressive box office success.

In the episode titled “Camping,” Brunson’s character Janine and Gregory, played by Tyler James Williams, donned costumes that creatively referenced Coogler and an IMAX screen instead of specific characters from the film. This clever nod comes as Sinners has garnered nearly $400 million worldwide since its release in April, solidifying its position as the fourth highest-grossing R-rated film in U.S. history.

Brunson shared that Coogler learned about the tribute from his aunt, who sent him a clip of the episode. “He said his auntie sent it to him and that’s how he found out about it, which was just so special to me,” Brunson stated, emphasizing the show’s mission to create family-friendly content.

The tribute took place at a gala in Los Angeles where Coogler was honored, further enhancing the significance of the moment. “He really appreciated it and was so honored,” she added, highlighting the emotional connection that the show fosters among viewers and filmmakers alike.

Brunson also noted that this isn’t the first time Abbott Elementary has honored Coogler’s work. In a previous season, a character dressed as Black Panther, another of Coogler’s acclaimed projects. “Oh, little Black Panther,” Janine remarked, reinforcing the show’s playful yet respectful approach to pop culture.

With a successful Halloween episode now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, fans of both Abbott Elementary and Sinners have much to celebrate. Sinners is also available on HBO Max and through PVOD options.

As anticipation builds for Season 6, fans are left wondering if Brunson used her time with Coogler to discuss a potential guest-starring role. Could he share insights on breaking into the film industry as a visitor at Abbott?
