Russell Simmons has resolved a long-standing financial dispute with three women who accused him of sexual misconduct. The settlements, which total over $3 million, had been pending for more than a year, according to court documents filed in 2024. The women—Wendy Franco, Sil Lai Abrams, and Sherri Abernathy—alleged that the co-founder of Def Jam had failed to fulfill his financial obligations under previously agreed terms.
The confirmation of the settlements came from the women’s attorney, who stated that “the matter has been resolved,” but did not provide further details. This resolution follows a turbulent period for Simmons, during which Franco expressed her disappointment regarding the delays. In an interview with Rolling Stone in April, she remarked, “It was devastating. I just felt so stupid that I thought this person would follow through.” Franco has not publicly detailed her specific allegations against Simmons, although her settlement paperwork references “physical injuries and sickness.”
In contrast, Abernathy and Abrams have made more explicit claims against Simmons. Abernathy alleges that Simmons raped her in 1983, while Abrams asserts that she was raped by him in 1994. Throughout these allegations, Simmons has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Legal Battles Continue for Simmons
In addition to settling with these accusers, Simmons is embroiled in a separate legal battle with HBO. Earlier this year, he filed a defamation lawsuit against the network, seeking $20 million. This lawsuit stems from the documentary *On The Record*, which highlights allegations of sexual abuse against him that surfaced in 2020.
Simmons’ legal team contended that there is “voluminous support for Mr. Simmons in the form of credible information, persuasive evidence, witness statements,” and the calls for further investigation by notable figures. They claim that HBO disregarded this evidence in favor of a narrative that they argue is misleading and damaging.
Responding to Simmons’ lawsuit, a spokesperson for HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros Discovery, stated, “We dispute Mr. Simmons’ allegations, stand by the filmmakers and their process, and will vigorously defend ourselves against these unfounded allegations.”
The resolution of the settlements marks a significant moment for the women involved, while Simmons continues to navigate the complexities of his ongoing legal challenges. The outcomes of both the settlements and the defamation case will likely have lasting implications for all parties involved.
