Richard L. “Rich” Townsley, a devoted husband, father, and U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on November 8, 2025. He was surrounded by his family at his home in Oley, Pennsylvania. Townsley leaves behind a legacy of love, having shared 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary (Dissinger) Townsley.

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Townsley was the son of the late Jesse M. and Caroline S. Townsley. He graduated from Wyomissing High School and furthered his education at Polytech. His professional career included work as a machine and pipe designer, showcasing his technical skills and dedication to his craft. Townsley was also a proud U.S. Army veteran, reflecting his commitment to service.

A Life of Faith and Community Engagement

For over 50 years, Townsley was an active member of Friedens Lutheran Church in Oley. His strong faith guided his life and inspired many within his community. Beyond his church involvement, he was passionate about woodworking, fishing, and cycling. He notably participated in more than 50 bike rides to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, demonstrating his commitment to both personal and charitable pursuits.

Townsley was not only known for his community service but also for his love of games. He enjoyed competitive games of cribbage and cards, bringing joy and spirit to family gatherings and social events.

Family Legacy and Memorial Service

In addition to his wife, Mary, Townsley is survived by his four children: Theresa Apgar (Gary), Jeffery Townsley (Paula), Deborah Bender (Jon), and Steven Townsley (Manoka). He is also remembered by his 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, each cherishing the memories they created together. He is predeceased by his brother, Jesse Townsley.

A memorial service honoring Richard L. Townsley will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Friedens Lutheran Church, located at 1076 Memorial Hwy, Oley, PA 19547. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather starting at 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made in Rich’s honor to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Miller-Keystone Blood Center. Edward J.
