The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated a resurfacing project on state Route 93, also known as Broad Street. The work spans from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the border of Carbon and Luzerne counties, just outside Hazleton’s city limits. The total cost of this project is estimated at $3,796,370, with completion expected by November 2025.

According to Rich Roman, District Executive of PennDOT, there will be lane restrictions during the project, but no detours are planned. Roman explained, “We’re milling the existing pavement surface, putting back new asphalt, and making drainage repairs, pipe replacements, and resurfacing the roadway.” The project is contracted to Pennsy Supply, based in Harrisburg, and is financed through transportation funding.

Details of the Resurfacing Work

Work began on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, starting from the Banks Township line to Poplar Street in Hazleton. Roman indicated that paving should be completed within the current season, contingent on weather conditions. He noted, “The latest update I received is that they started doing milling of the current surface and are working their way from the Carbon County line to the other end of the project.”

The ongoing work will maintain the current road configuration, meaning there will be no additional lanes or expansion of the roadway. This resurfacing effort is part of a larger initiative that connects to a previous paving job on state Route 93, which was completed several years ago and extended from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township.

This resurfacing project aims to improve road safety and enhance the driving experience for local residents and commuters. As work progresses, PennDOT encourages drivers to remain cautious and pay attention to any lane restrictions in place.
