A faction of Republicans, self-identified as a “shadow RNC,” is making strides to reclaim the party from the influence of former President Donald Trump and his “MAGA takeover.” The group, officially termed Our Republican Legacy (ORL), aims to build a coalition that can effectively challenge Trump-aligned candidates in the lead-up to the 2028 presidential election.

At a recent conference in Maryland, former chair of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele, expressed concerns over what he described as an “authoritarian takeover” of the nation. Steele voiced his apprehension about leaders who, in his view, act like royalty, stating, “We’re concerned about the authoritarian takeover of our country by a madman who sees himself as a king.”

The ORL has grown significantly, now boasting 25 state chairs across the United States. The organization is actively working to elect its members to local offices, aiming to influence the electoral landscape in a way that counters the current trajectory of the GOP. The first target for their campaign is Vice President JD Vance, whom former chair of the Washington State GOP, Chris Vance, described as “irredeemable.”

The group believes that the current political climate offers them an opportunity to reshape the party’s priorities. They are focusing on issues of affordability and economic stability, pointing out that many cultural topics, such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade and restrictions on transgender surgeries, have already been addressed during the Trump administration. One ORL member emphasized the need to shift the Republican agenda back toward traditional conservative values that resonate with a broader base of voters.

As the 2028 election approaches, the ORL hopes to galvanize support within the party and challenge the dominance of Trump-aligned candidates. Their strategy includes fostering a network of like-minded Republicans who are committed to restoring what they see as the true essence of the GOP.

This initiative reflects a broader sentiment among some Republicans who are increasingly wary of the direction in which the party has been heading under Trump’s influence. The shadow group is not merely a reactionary movement; it is a concerted effort to reclaim the Republican Party from what they view as a radical shift that could alienate mainstream voters.

The coming months will be pivotal for the ORL as they attempt to solidify their influence within the Republican Party. With an increasing number of members and a clear focus on key issues, they aim to make a significant impact in the upcoming elections, ensuring that their vision for the GOP resonates with both party loyalists and the electorate at large.
