Richard “Dick” David Waller, a respected electrical engineer and passionate jazz musician, died at the age of 88. His passing comes just five months after the death of his beloved wife, Marilyn Waller. Waller’s family announced the news with heavy hearts, reflecting on a life filled with love, music, and significant professional achievements.

Born on March 28, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Richard faced early challenges when he and his younger brother, Ronnie, were raised by their grandparents following their mother, Mildred’s, passing. The brothers attended St. John Kanty Catholic grade school and later Pulaski High School. Richard demonstrated an early affinity for mathematics and music, interests that ultimately shaped his career.

Waller financed his college education by performing at jazz nightclubs. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University in 1958 after attending the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Following graduation, he served in the Wisconsin Air National Guard before joining Hughes Aircraft Corporation in Los Angeles in 1959. There, he contributed to numerous defense projects, pioneering technologies that are still in use today.

In 1960, Richard met Marilyn Herrmann, who was living in the same apartment complex while training for a career with Western Airlines. The couple married in 1961, establishing their home in Westchester before moving to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1969. Their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Susan, in 1966, and their son, Steven, in 1971. The family enjoyed extensive travel, creating cherished memories across Europe, South America, and Asia, as well as memorable trips to Hawaii and skiing vacations.

Music remained a significant part of Richard’s life. He played in various big band jazz and Latin bands throughout the South Bay, showcasing his talents on the alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute. He frequently performed at Alpine Village and maintained a passion for golf.

Richard is predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, and his brother, Ronald Waller. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Poland (Mike), son, Steven Waller, grandchildren Shaun, Matthew, and Sara Poland, and Stephanie and Sophia Waller, as well as his great-grandchild, Celeste Poland. He also leaves behind cousins, nieces, and nephews, ensuring his legacy continues through family and friends.
