Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a devoted wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Surrounded by her husband, Clayton, and daughters, Jennifer and Gwendolyn, she left behind a legacy of love and care that touched many lives.
Born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally grew up in Torrance, California. She met Clayton Mallard in the 10th grade at Torrance High School, where their love story began. After two years at Whittier College, Sally married Clayton on August 5, 1956. Together, they celebrated an incredible 69 years of marriage, during which they built a warm and welcoming family environment.
Throughout her life, Sally excelled in various roles. She was a talented seamstress, cook, and hostess, always striving to make family gatherings special. The couple moved frequently due to Clayton’s career, residing in cities such as Atlanta, Georgia, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before finally settling in Fallbrook, California, in 2002. Their home became a hub for family and friends, evidenced by hosting the 60th reunion of the Torrance High School Class of 1955 at their residence.
Sally’s commitment to her community extended to her church, where her kindness and thoughtfulness created bonds among members. She was also an avid bridge player, teaching the game in Iowa and participating in local groups in Tustin and Fallbrook. Her passion for tennis blossomed later in life; she joined the Fallbrook Tennis Club and formed lasting friendships with fellow members.
The highlights of Sally’s life included the births of her four daughters, their weddings, and the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Celebrating milestones brought her immense joy. One particularly cherished event was her 50th wedding anniversary, where she gathered family and friends to celebrate love and togetherness. A special moment at this gathering was a visit from Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian AFS student who had lived with the family in 1976-77.
Sally is survived by her loving husband, Clayton, her three sisters, Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson, as well as her daughters, Rebecca Mallard (Debbie), Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian (Mike), and Cynthia Swift (Larry). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Spencer, Anastasia, Taylor, Dylan, Amanda, Farren, Nicolette, and Rachel, along with great-grandchildren Londyn, Pharaoh, and Treasure. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who will remember her vibrant spirit.
A Memorial Service for family and friends will take place on January 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook. Sally Ann Sprout Mallard will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
