Joseph Edward Gummerson Jr., aged 88, passed away peacefully in his home overlooking Lake Superior on September 17, 2025. Known for his dedication to both the community and the environment, Gummerson lived a life characterized by peace, dignity, and grace.
Born on April 8, 1937, in Peoria, Illinois, to Joseph Sr. and Mercedes (Baker) Gummerson, he developed a strong connection to nature early in life. His passion for the outdoors led him to a career with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as an area forester and fire specialist. Gummerson dedicated his professional life to the stewardship of natural resources, emphasizing the importance of caring for both people and the environment.
On July 25, 1981, Gummerson married Mary Kay Ponsolle, with whom he shared a profound bond. Together, they created a loving family environment that reflected his commitment to family values. He often found solace along the banks of a trout stream, viewing these moments as opportunities to learn patience and presence, rather than merely focusing on the catch.
Gummerson is survived by his wife, Mary, and their three children: Debra (Tim) Robbins, Mary Jo Norrell, and Susan (Steve) Verado. He is also remembered by his sister, Mary Heyl; brothers-in-law, Mark (Carol) Ponsolle and John (Michelle) Ponsolle; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jim, son James, and daughter Theresa.
