Howard “Moe” Oliver Saunders, Jr., aged 90, passed away peacefully in his home on September 15, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of family, service, and community involvement.
Born and raised in the Larchmont area of Norfolk, Virginia, Howard was the son of Howard O. Saunders and Capitola Aydelotte Saunders. He attended Maury High School before going on to study at Randolph Macon College. His commitment to his country led him to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he demonstrated dedication and resilience.
Howard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Saunders, and his daughter, Deborah Fesko. He is survived by two sons, Howard Kent Saunders (Pamela) and Robert Saunders (Valerie), along with six grandchildren: Christina (Chris), Michael (Taylor), Matthew, Andrew, Jessica, and Hannah. His family also includes two great-grandsons, Bryce and Ryan, who were a source of joy in his later years.
Community Impact and Business Success
Together with Barbara, Howard founded Saunders Business Systems, Inc., a successful family business that contributed significantly to the local community. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence were key factors in the company’s longevity.
A respected member of his community, Howard was actively involved in several organizations. He was a faithful member of Churchland Baptist and a participant in the Portsmouth Host Lions Club. Additionally, he served on the Board of the Taylor Bend YMCA, where he worked to promote health and wellness initiatives.
The family has planned a funeral service to honor Howard’s life, scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Loving Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on the evening of September 19 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
