A heartfelt recollection of kindness during a challenging time has led former Army soldier Mikee Richards to seek out the family of his late friend, Delbert Forbes. Their bond was formed in 1966 while they were both undergoing basic training at Fort Ord, California, before heading off to serve in Vietnam.
Richards, who was only 18 years old at the time, faced a difficult home life. His father, a World War II veteran and cattle rancher, was known for his harsh demeanor and disapproval of education. After being forced to leave school and home at the age of 15, Richards joined the Army, receiving a modest allowance of $60 per month. With little financial support and uncertain about his future, he turned to Delbert for help during a critical moment.
After completing basic training, Richards found himself with only $30 in his pocket and no place to go during a two-week leave. Delbert offered him a lifeline, inviting him to stay with his family in Paradise, California. During that time, Delbert’s parents provided Richards with meals and hospitality, even purchasing his return ticket to Fort Ord.
The kindness shown by the Forbes family had a profound impact on Richards. “I fell in love with Paradise during the two weeks that I was with Delbert,” he recalls. Although the two lost contact after their reassignment, Richards has carried the memory of their friendship throughout his life. After serving 17 months in Germany, followed by a tour in Vietnam, he attempted to reconnect with the Forbes family but was unable to locate them.
Richards has lived in California since 1999, following a career of over 30 years with Hewlett Packard. After retiring in 2014, he and his wife, Diana, relocated to Magalia. They faced further tragedy in 2018 when the devastating Camp Fire forced them to evacuate, resulting in the loss of their home. They currently reside in Kelly Ridge.
