The community mourns the loss of David Wesley Angel, who passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on October 2, 1939, in Hinton, Oklahoma, David was a devoted husband, father, and friend known for his adventurous spirit and deep appreciation for nature.
David’s early life unfolded in Chula Vista, California, where he moved with his mother, Bessie Porter, and his three sisters in 1941. Growing up, he developed lasting friendships and became an avid supporter of the local sports teams, often cheering for the Spartans. His adventurous nature led him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force, where he completed his training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His journey took a romantic turn when he met his future wife, Lorraine, at a surprise birthday party. This fortuitous encounter marked the beginning of a loving partnership that lasted over six decades.
After settling in San Diego, California, David and Lorraine welcomed three children: Kristen, Kelly, and Jon David. He dedicated much of his professional life to the Department of Defense at the Coronado Naval Base. Seeking more time in nature and with family, David retired early in his 40s, a decision that allowed him to pursue his passion for the outdoors.
In 1992, David and Lorraine transitioned from San Diego to Magalia, California, seeking a more serene environment. Their children, however, followed them, settling nearby in Chico, California. Despite relocating, David remained a devoted fan of the San Diego Padres and San Diego Chargers, reflecting his enduring ties to his hometown.
A Passion for Nature and Craftsmanship
David’s gentle demeanor and introspective nature left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He possessed a profound curiosity for living creatures, particularly reptiles, and was known for his love of snakes. With Lorraine, he successfully hatched two King Snakes, one of which lived for over 20 years. Their home was filled with a variety of pets, including a skunk, cats, and desert tortoises, showcasing David’s affection for the animal kingdom.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, David volunteered with the Eagle Scouts and engaged in numerous outdoor adventures, including a memorable ten-day backpacking trip to climb Mt. Whitney, California’s highest peak. During this expedition, he caught and prepared trout, cherishing the experience with fellow hikers. His love for jogging and biking saw him complete several 5-kilometer runs and a half marathon, while Sunday bike rides with Lorraine often turned into family outings.
David also had a passion for woodworking, which he honed over the years. His meticulous craftsmanship resulted in beautiful furniture and cherished gifts for family and friends.
