The Boston Red Sox have made a significant move in the offseason by trading pitchers Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for veteran starter Sonny Gray. The deal, which also includes cash considerations, was announced on December 5, 2023.
Gray, a three-time All-Star, had a successful season with the Cardinals in 2025, finishing with a record of 14-8 and a 4.28 earned-run average (ERA) over 32 starts. The right-hander’s experience and proven track record make him a valuable addition to the Red Sox rotation as they aim for a more competitive season.
Fitts, who hails from Auburn, Alabama, struggled with injuries during his time with the Red Sox. In his second season, he posted a 2-4 record in 10 starts, with a 5.00 ERA. His season was marred by a right pectoral strain that sidelined him for more than a month, and he also dealt with elbow neuritis that limited his effectiveness later in the year.
Clarke, another pitcher included in the trade, had a challenging first minor league season. He recorded an 0-3 record in 14 starts with a 4.03 ERA, striking out 60 batters in 38 innings while allowing 27 walks. Although he showed promise, his performance did not meet the expectations set for a player with his background.
In announcing the trade, the Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations expressed confidence in the potential of both Fitts and Clarke. “With his power stuff and willingness to attack the strike zone, Fitts has the ability to start games at the highest level for many years,” he stated. “Brandon Clarke is an exciting left-handed prospect whose ceiling rivals that of any pitcher in the minor leagues.”
Gray’s notable career spans over 13 Major League seasons, during which he has represented the Oakland Athletics, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, and now the Red Sox. His journey includes three All-Star selections, highlighting his status as one of the league’s top pitchers.
Fitts made a name for himself in high school, contributing to the Helena Huskies’ AHSAA Class 6A baseball championship team in 2017, despite facing injury challenges. He continued to develop his skills at Auburn University, where he posted a 6-6 record with a 5.54 ERA over 40 games before being drafted by the New York Yankees in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
The Yankees later traded Fitts to the Red Sox as part of a deal to acquire outfielder Alex Verdugo. Upon joining the Red Sox, Fitts began his Major League career with an impressive start, pitching at least five innings without allowing an earned run in his first three games.
As the Red Sox prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Gray is expected to enhance their pitching staff and bolster their chances in a highly competitive league. The trade reflects a strategic approach aimed at strengthening the team’s core and improving overall performance.
