The Los Angeles Rams have placed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on injured reserve following a broken clavicle sustained during their recent victory over the Tennessee Titans. This decision came on Monday, just a day after the Rams secured a 33-19 win, improving their record to 2-0 for the season.
Witherspoon, who is 30 years old, will be sidelined for at least four games. However, injuries to the clavicle typically require a recovery period of six to twelve weeks, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. Head coach Sean McVay referred to Witherspoon’s injury as “a big loss” for the team, which is looking to build on its early success this season.
In his third season with the Rams, Witherspoon had started both games this year, recording three tackles and one pass deflection. His injury occurred in the second quarter against the Titans, leading to his immediate exclusion from the remainder of the game. Over his nine-year career in the NFL, Witherspoon has played 92 games, making 64 starts. He has accumulated 238 tackles, 12 interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), 59 passes defended, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
The Rams will now turn to their depth chart for replacements at the cornerback position. Emmanuel Forbes, Cobie Durant, and Darious Williams are options for coach McVay. Forbes has already started both games this season, while Williams made his season debut on Sunday in relief of Witherspoon.
As the Rams navigate this setback, the team remains focused on maintaining momentum through the upcoming games. The injured reserve designation for Witherspoon underscores the challenges of sustaining a competitive roster in the NFL, particularly as teams strive to balance performance with player health.
