Protests are set to take place across the United States this weekend, with significant gatherings planned in the metro Detroit area. Various local and national organizations are mobilizing supporters to demonstrate from January 9 to January 10, 2024. The protests stem from recent events, including the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7.

Planned Events in Metro Detroit

On Friday, January 9, a protest and vigil will be held at Clark Park in Detroit at 18:00. This event is organized by several groups, including the Detroit Will Breathe and MI Students Dream. Additionally, a rally is scheduled from 15:30 to 17:00 at 28992 Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak, led by the Oak Park Concerned Citizens. This rally is part of a national initiative responding to the events in Venezuela and the killing of Good.

Meanwhile, Indivisible Ann Arbor will host a candlelight vigil at Liberty Plaza, also starting at 18:00. This series of events reflects a growing sentiment among community members calling for justice and accountability.

Saturday and Sunday Actions

On Saturday, January 10, the Detroit Anti-War Committee and the Metro Detroit Democratic Socialists of America will lead a protest at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, commencing at 15:00. Indivisible is encouraging participation in this event, as well as in several local “ICE Out For Good” protests in nearby suburbs, including Oak Park and Lake Orion. Simultaneously, Indivisible Ann Arbor will conduct a rally and march in their area.

On Sunday, January 11, chapters of Indivisible from Oxford and Saline are expected to hold additional protests. Stand Up Fight Back Southeast Michigan plans to gather in Rochester Hills at 14:30, further emphasizing the ongoing community response to these pressing issues.

As these protests unfold, they highlight not only local concerns but also connect to broader national debates regarding immigration policies and international relations. Community members are encouraged to join in these demonstrations to voice their opinions and seek justice for victims of systemic violence.
