UPDATE: A devastating explosion at Prospect Valley Dairy in Keenesburg, Colorado, has left six people dead, including a high school student. Officials are investigating the incident as a possible gas exposure accident that occurred in a confined space on Wednesday.

Authorities confirmed the tragic news earlier today, shocking the rural community about 35 miles northeast of Denver. The victims, all Hispanic males, have not yet been publicly identified as families are still being notified. Among the deceased is a student from Highland High School in Ault, prompting the local school district to offer counseling and support services to students and staff.

Investigators from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are probing the scene. “It looks like an accident,” said spokesperson Melissa Chesmore, noting that no evidence of a crime has been found. The explosion is believed to have resulted from gas exposure, according to Jolene Weiner, chief deputy coroner for Weld County.

Emergency crews recovered the bodies in a confined area of the dairy, with reports indicating that three additional individuals were treated for injuries at UCHealth Greeley Hospital and have since been released. As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of those affected, with a former employee of the dairy expressing grief over the tragic event. “They started working here about six years ago,” he stated.

The Dairy Farmers of America expressed deep sorrow regarding the incident, stating, “Our thoughts and most sincere condolences go out to the friends and families of the deceased.” As the leading dairy producer in Colorado, Weld County is a critical agricultural hub, with three-quarters of its land devoted to farming.

The investigation continues, and more information is expected to emerge as officials work diligently to determine the exact cause of this horrific explosion. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
