Plug Power Inc. has installed a 5MW GenEco electrolyzer for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s renewable energy landscape. This installation is part of the innovative green hydrogen project at the newly opened facility in Walvis Bay, which commenced operations in September 2025. The project represents Africa’s first fully integrated commercial green hydrogen facility, aiming to enhance hydrogen mobility in Namibia and its neighboring regions.
The electrolyzer is strategically integrated at Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s Hydrogen Dune site. This facility includes a 5MW solar park that spans over 6.5 hectares, alongside a 5.9 MWh battery energy storage system. Together, these components are designed to produce renewable hydrogen off the grid, utilizing solar energy effectively. The locally generated hydrogen will primarily support hydrogen-powered trucks and equipment operating at the Port of Walvis Bay, including port and rail machinery, as well as small ships.
Plug Power is a recognized leader in hydrogen solutions, and its involvement in this project highlights the company’s commitment to expanding the hydrogen economy. The project is anticipated to facilitate a shift towards sustainable transport solutions, with vehicles on-site being converted for dual-fuel operation, using both hydrogen and conventional fuels.
The opening of this facility is expected to have a profound impact on the region’s energy landscape, providing a sustainable alternative for transportation and contributing to reducing carbon emissions. It also sets a precedent for similar projects across the continent, demonstrating the viability of green hydrogen as a critical component in the transition to renewable energy.
Cleanergy Solutions Namibia aims to leverage this facility not only to meet local energy demands but also to position Namibia as a leader in the green hydrogen sector. The project aligns with global trends towards sustainability and innovation in energy production, further emphasizing the importance of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
With the success of the Walvis Bay project, Plug Power and Cleanergy Solutions Namibia are paving the way for a new era of energy in Africa, where green hydrogen can play a vital role in achieving a low-carbon future. The collaboration showcases how partnerships in technology and energy can drive significant advancements in addressing climate change while supporting economic development in the region.
