Pickerington High Schools Central and North have been selected to participate in the highly esteemed 2025–26 CAPA Marquee Awards Program, organized by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA). This recognition places them among a competitive group of 30 schools that demonstrate exceptional talent in the performing arts.
The CAPA Marquee Awards, supported by the American Electric Power Foundation, aim to highlight the importance of high school musical theatre education. This initiative provides students with invaluable experiences, including professional mentorship that sharpens their skills and prepares them for the stage.
Enhancing Theatre Education
Participants in the program will benefit from a range of opportunities, such as master classes with Broadway touring actors and workshops led by industry professionals. According to Amy Handra, Director of Education at CAPA, these experiences are crucial, particularly as “funding for the arts and education is being cut nationwide.” The inclusion of schools like Pickerington serves to underscore the importance of preserving arts education, especially during challenging financial times.
The lineup for the upcoming season features several newcomers, including The Arts and College Preparatory Academy, Central Crossing High School, and Hamilton Township High School. This selection reflects CAPA’s goal of expanding its influence and engagement across various educational settings. Each participating institution will have the opportunity to showcase its productions, receiving constructive feedback from seasoned professionals in the theatre industry.
Looking Ahead to the Awards
As the program unfolds, anticipation builds for the announcement of nominees across different categories, scheduled for April 16, 2026. The culmination of this initiative will take place during a red-carpet awards ceremony on May 13, 2026, at the Ohio Theatre. This event promises to be an exciting celebration, reminiscent of the Tony Awards, featuring live performances from talented students representing each participating school.
Last year’s Marquee Awards highlighted the achievements of Pickerington’s own Kamryn Dansby, who won the award for Best Performer in a Leading Role. Following this recognition, she had the opportunity to attend the prestigious Jimmy Awards in New York City, where she mingled with some of Broadway’s finest talents.
The CAPA Marquee Awards Program not only fosters artistic growth and recognition among high school students but also reinforces the critical role that the arts play in education. As these schools prepare for the upcoming season, their involvement in this program signifies a commitment to nurturing the next generation of theatrical talent.
