The Phoenix Suns have strengthened their roster by claiming former Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Goodwin off waivers. This move, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, reunites the Suns with the four-year veteran, who previously played 40 games for them in the 2023-24 season.

Goodwin has made a notable impact in the league, particularly during his time with the Lakers last season. In 29 games, he showcased a gritty defensive style, contributing significantly off the bench. His performance earned him praise, as he consistently demonstrated a commitment to the small, essential plays that contribute to team success.

After the Lakers signed Marcus Smart, Goodwin was waived to create roster space. He joins the Suns on a $2.3 million contract, which includes only $25,000 guaranteed. The remainder of his contract will be guaranteed if he remains on the roster past January 7, 2026. The $25,000 is being accounted for on Los Angeles’ salary cap as they adjust their lineup.

During his initial tenure with Phoenix, Goodwin filled a similar role to that which he played with the Lakers. He is recognized as a gritty, defensive guard who excels in transition and contributes to winning plays. In his 40 games with the Suns, Goodwin averaged 5.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.6 steals in approximately 14 minutes per game. His shooting percentages were 38.9% from the field, 28.8% from three-point range, and 86.2% from the free-throw line.

Goodwin’s performance improved significantly after he signed a two-way deal with the Memphis Grizzlies later that season. In 17 games, he averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals over 29.2 minutes per game, demonstrating his potential and ability to adapt to different roles.

First-year head coach Jordan Ott is excited about Goodwin’s addition, highlighting the guard’s defensive mindset and versatility. Goodwin was also a favorite of Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who referred to him as a “banshee” alongside teammates Dorian Finney-Smith and Jared Vanderbilt for their intense defensive play when on the court together.

This acquisition aligns with the Suns’ strategy as they enter a retooling phase. They are keen on integrating younger players with upside on manageable contracts, like Goodwin. For the 26-year-old guard, this opportunity represents a crucial step in extending his career in the league. Suns fans are likely to welcome Goodwin back warmly, as he left a positive impression during his previous stint with the franchise, making him a player to watch in the upcoming season.
