This document, crucial for accessing various benefits and services, is issued to servicemembers upon their separation or retirement from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. Lacking this essential paperwork can lead to significant delays in obtaining the benefits that veterans have earned through their service.
Keith Graham, executive director of Veterans Affairs, emphasized the importance of having the correct documentation. “Helping veterans receive the benefits they earned from serving this nation is a priority for DMVA, and that always starts with having the right paperwork to prove military service,” he stated. Veterans are encouraged to reach out for assistance or visit the newly established Lickdale Veterans’ Outreach Center in Jonestown, PA, where walk-in services are available. The center’s team of accredited veteran service officers is prepared to provide support.
In addition to aiding veterans in obtaining the DD-214, the DMVA also facilitates the acquisition of the DD Form 215 (DD-215). This document corrects or updates information on the DD-214, ensuring that discharge records are both accurate and complete. During the past fiscal year, the DMVA processed over 2,300 requests for assistance with military records, including responding to approximately 400 phone calls.
Officials are stressing the importance of securing these records promptly following discharge to prevent complications that can arise later.
