The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has commenced a significant resurfacing project on state Route 93, also known as Broad Street. The work stretches from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the border of Carbon and Luzerne counties, just outside the Hazleton City limits. The total expenditure for this project is approximately $3,796,370, with completion anticipated by November 2025, as outlined in PennDOT’s PA projects construction map.
According to Rich Roman, PennDOT District 4 Executive, there will be no detours during the project, although lane restrictions will be in place. “We’re milling the existing pavement surface, putting back new asphalt, and making drainage repairs, pipe replacements, and resurfacing the roadway,” he stated. The work is contracted to Pennsy Supply, based in Harrisburg, and is funded through transportation financing.
The resurfacing efforts will begin on August 26, 2025, starting from the Banks Township line and progressing to Poplar Street in Hazleton. Roman noted that paving should ideally be completed within the current season, contingent on weather conditions. “The latest update I received is that they started doing milling of the current surface and are working their way from the Carbon County line to the other end of the project,” he added.
This initiative will maintain the current road configuration, with no plans for additional lanes or roadway expansions during this phase of work. The project serves to connect with a previous paving job on state Route 93, which was completed several years ago and extended from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township.
The resurfacing of state Route 93 is a crucial infrastructure improvement for the area, aimed at enhancing safety and driving conditions. As work progresses, local residents and commuters are encouraged to remain aware of lane restrictions and to plan their travel accordingly.
