The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is commemorating its 75th anniversary on August 2, 2023, by hosting a special adoption event featuring a remarkable fee of just 75 cents for all animals at the shelter. This initiative aims to encourage pet adoptions while celebrating the organization’s long-standing commitment to connecting pets with loving homes.
The adoption event will take place at the Lantos Center for Compassion, located at 1450 Rollins Road, Burlingame, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 5 p.m. to facilitate same-day adoptions. In addition to the low adoption fees, potential adopters will be responsible for any necessary licensing and training costs.
As part of the festivities, the Humane Society will offer a variety of engaging activities from noon to 4 p.m., including games and complimentary treats for attendees. The event will also feature a selection of merchandise in the Furchandise store, including specially stocked T-shirts to mark the occasion.
Art Installation Explores American Identity
In addition to the adoption event, the Redwood City Improvement Association is showcasing an art installation titled “Coming Home” by Bay Area artist Ryan Carrington. This exhibition is on display at the Art Kiosk, located at 2208 Broadway, and will run through September 7, 2023.
Carrington’s large-scale work delves into the evolving concept of the American Dream, utilizing symbols of Americana and representations of both blue- and white-collar labor. Notably, he incorporates American flags fashioned from the uniforms of workers across various class lines, alongside pieces named after family members, such as “Grandma Mae” and “Larry.”
The artist’s background as a teaching professor at Santa Clara University and his upbringing in a blue-collar family in the Midwest deeply influence his work. Carrington’s installations, which often reflect his respect for labor and craftsmanship, have received national recognition for their poignant storytelling through materials.
An artist’s reception for “Coming Home” is scheduled for September 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. For those interested in attending, further details can be found at the Fung Collaboratives website.
These events not only celebrate significant milestones for the Peninsula Humane Society but also highlight the vibrant cultural contributions of local artists in the community.
