BREAKING: Patton High School in Morganton is set to revive its varsity football team this fall after a year-long hiatus. Head coach Billy Whisenant confirmed that approximately 30-35 players have been attending summer workouts, making it feasible to field both a junior varsity (JV) and varsity team.
Coach Whisenant stated, “Our plan is to do both,” emphasizing the team’s readiness to tackle the challenges ahead. While he acknowledges that injuries could impact their plans, the commitment to a full varsity season remains firm. “They want the challenge,” Whisenant added, highlighting the determination of his players, especially after a year with only JV football.
Last fall, Patton was unable to field a varsity team due to low participation, particularly in the junior and senior classes. Coach Whisenant described the situation, noting that he had just one junior on the team. “That one class sets back everything,” he explained. The lack of experience has made recruiting challenging, as bringing in new players at the varsity level is difficult.
Despite last season’s setbacks, Whisenant’s current squad has gained valuable experience from their JV season, where they managed a respectable 5-3 record. “They’ve had a year to develop,” he said, reflecting on the growth of his team. The players, now more seasoned, are eager to compete at a higher level.
The urgency of the situation is palpable, with the fall season approaching rapidly. Whisenant is optimistic about the team’s prospects and believes they are in a better position than last year. “The one thing you’ll see with my team is they fight,” he remarked, instilling hope in the hearts of both players and supporters alike.
As preparations intensify, all eyes will be on Patton High as they gear up for what promises to be an exciting comeback in high school football this fall. Coach Whisenant and his team are ready to prove that they are back and prepared to compete at the varsity level.
