Born in Uganda, Oketch’s early experiences with religion were marked by a sense of obligation rather than genuine connection. He recalls attending a Catholic church during his childhood but describes feeling a calling towards leadership that he initially did not pursue. In January 2000, he immigrated to the United States, where he met his wife, Betty, during a visit to Uganda. The couple eventually settled in North Dakota, where they raised their family.
For nearly a decade, Oketch worked in the oilfield while occasionally attending Adonai Evangelical Church. His commitment to the church waned as his work schedule became increasingly demanding. However, a pivotal moment occurred when he encountered Amos Byamungu, the former pastor of Adonai, during routine grocery shopping. Byamungu’s persistent invitations reignited Oketch’s faith journey, leading him back to the church.
A Call to Leadership and Baptism
In 2021, Oketch became a regular attendee at Adonai Evangelical Church, which is located at 45 Osborne Drive in Dickinson. This renewed involvement allowed him to experience a deepening relationship with God, culminating in his decision to be baptized. Initially, he contributed by assisting with administrative tasks. However, as he embraced his faith, he felt the call to take on a more significant role within the church community.
Today, Oketch serves as a pastor, guiding the congregation through worship services held on Sundays at 12:30 p.m. and prayer gatherings on Wednesdays at 18:00. The church also conducts discipleship sessions and Bible studies every Friday at 18:00.
