Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young experienced a challenging rookie season, marked by significant changes within the team’s coaching staff. The Panthers dismissed head coach Frank Reich less than a year after selecting Young as the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. A detailed report published by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Turron Davenport on October 3, 2023, highlighted the difficulties Young faced during his first year in the league.
According to sources within the Panthers organization, Young developed “poor habits” related to footwork, fundamentals, and overall preparation during his time under Reich. The young quarterback averaged approximately 33 passing attempts per game but struggled behind a beleaguered offensive line that allowed an alarming total of 62 sacks. This made Young the second-most sacked quarterback in the NFL during the 2023 season.
The statistics paint a stark picture of Young’s performance. He concluded the regular season with a 73.7 passer rating, ranking him last among qualified quarterbacks, while his 59.8% completion percentage placed him 31st out of 32 players, according to Pro Football Reference.
In January 2024, the Panthers made a significant move by hiring Dave Canales, former offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as Reich’s full-time successor. Canales’ tenure began with a benching of Young following two disappointing outings early in the season. Reflecting on Young’s adaptation to the professional level, Reich stated, “Learning the pro game … defenses are a lot better. There are no easy games.”
Young managed to earn respect from both teammates and coaches as he navigated the challenges of his rookie year. When then-starter Andy Dalton suffered a sprained thumb in a car accident in October 2023, Young stepped back into the starting role. He then started the last ten games of the season, completing 61.8% of his passes for 2,104 yards, with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. In addition to his passing stats, Young rushed for 223 yards and scored five touchdowns, contributing to the Panthers’ record of four wins in their final ten games.
As the Panthers prepare for the upcoming season, Young’s relationships with Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik appear to have strengthened. The 24-year-old quarterback is set to open the new campaign against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 7, 2024, where he will look to build on his performance from the latter half of the previous season.
With a tumultuous rookie year behind him, Bryce Young’s development and adaptability will be under close scrutiny as he aims to solidify his position as the leader of the Panthers in the NFL.
