The Palisades Pirates are poised to build on their late-season momentum as they enter the 2024 football season, determined to improve upon last year’s rocky start. After suffering seven losses in their first eight games, the team rallied to secure victories in their final two contests, clinching a spot in the District 11 Class 2A playoffs. This turnaround has ignited enthusiasm among players and coaches alike.
Head coach Bobby Smith highlighted the shift in attitude that has emerged during the offseason. “The biggest takeaway from our offseason and so far in the preseason is seeing on every play somebody wants to make a play,” he stated. Last year’s challenge, according to Smith, was a lack of commitment, with players often adopting a casual approach. The recent drive, however, signals a newfound dedication, particularly among the four returning seniors who are eager to lead the team.
The Pirates’ final two regular-season games last year were a turning point, where they outscored opponents 68-6, gaining invaluable experience from the ensuing playoff game against Schuylkill Haven. Junior wide receiver/defensive back Lincoln Cook emphasized the importance of this momentum: “We’re all working hard to be better, and we’re going to turn things around. There is a lot of team chemistry and maturing.”
As Palisades prepares for the upcoming season, the roster features a solid core of nine seniors and six juniors who are committed to setting an example both on and off the field. Despite the loss of standout players John Haubert and Angelo Ziccardi, the Pirates boast a wealth of athleticism and experience, which will be crucial as they begin the season with a challenging schedule that includes five road games in the first six weeks.
The season opener is set for August 22, 2024, against District 1 rival Bristol. Smith is optimistic about his squad, stating, “For a 2A school, that’s great to have. They know their jobs and are playing more downhill.”
Key Players Emerge for the Pirates
Senior quarterback Jack Trickel is expected to take on a leadership role this season. After a promising first year as a full-time starter, where he completed 129 of 242 passes for 1,461 yards with 13 touchdowns, Trickel is focused on reducing his number of interceptions. “I worked a bunch in the offseason with the receivers and the linemen got together, too. There’s a chemistry there,” he noted.
Trickel’s commitment to improvement has paid off; he has grown three inches and added 18 pounds, enhancing his physical presence. Coach Smith remarked, “He’s had the biggest jump I’ve seen in all the players,” praising Trickel for his growth in reading defenses and his leadership capabilities.
Palisades’ offensive arsenal is bolstered by several talented athletes. Cook, who caught 49 passes for 627 yards and five touchdowns last season, is poised to become a game-changing receiver. Smith noted, “Cook as a wide receiver is among the top I’ve ever been around.” The synergy between Cook and Trickel is expected to be a key factor in the Pirates’ success.
Senior Ashton Fitzgerald will lead the running game, building on his previous season where he caught 22 passes, three of which were touchdowns. His speed, honed on the track team as part of a state-qualifying 400-meter relay squad, will add a significant dimension to the offense. Meanwhile, senior Silas Day and senior Max Woerner are expected to make substantial contributions on both sides of the ball, with Day noted for his defensive prowess and Woerner for his interception and forced fumble stats.
Building a Strong Foundation
The Pirates’ offensive line has shown marked improvement, which is critical for supporting the skill players in sustaining drives. Junior Will Kapp anchors the unit at center, supported by senior Rowan Tharp at right tackle and junior Matt Casterline at right guard. Smith and junior Carter Kilhefner will man the left side, with many players expected to contribute on both offense and defense.
As the team gears up for the season, the urgency to capitalize on their experiences has resonated deeply. Smith remarked, “The whole offseason, this team realized that this could be the last 10 games for the seniors.” With all nine seniors who have been starting since their sophomore year, the players understand the importance of their commitment and effort.
The Palisades Pirates are ready to embark on their season, aiming to convert last year’s lessons into victories. Their first scrimmage is scheduled for 10 a.m. on August 22, followed by a series of challenging matches, including a notable game against Notre Dame-GP at Lafayette College on October 10, 2024.
As the season unfolds, the Pirates will look to build on their late-season success and demonstrate their growth on the field. The anticipation surrounding the team suggests that fans can expect an exciting season ahead.
