UPDATE: The Indiana Pacers have announced that new center Ivica Zubac will not make his debut until he fully recovers from an ankle injury and completes his paternity leave. Coach Rick Carlisle revealed the news just ahead of the Pacers’ game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

Zubac, who joined the Pacers from the LA Clippers in a blockbuster trade on Thursday, has been managing an ankle issue since December. “It’s kind of yo-yo’d a little bit,” Carlisle stated, indicating that Zubac is not yet at full strength. “We’re not going to put him out there until he’s really ready.”

The Pacers acquired Zubac alongside Kobe Brown in exchange for Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, and multiple draft picks, including a 2026 first-round pick. This deal aims to address a significant void at center following Myles Turner‘s departure in free agency.

Zubac was unavailable for his final game with the Clippers due to the birth of his first child. He had participated in nine consecutive games prior and has played in 43 contests this season, averaging 14.4 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 61% from the field. Despite his strong performance, Zubac has yet to attempt a three-pointer this season, contrasting sharply with Turner’s perimeter shooting capabilities.

Currently, the Pacers sit with the third-worst record in the NBA at 13-38, trailing by 10.5 games for the last play-in spot. This trade comes with strategic implications, as the Pacers hold a 14% chance at the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft due to their current standings. Importantly, the 2026 first-round pick is protected in the top 1-4 of the draft or 10-30, which adds layers to the team’s future planning.

Carlisle emphasized Zubac’s durability throughout his career, noting, “He’s a guy that has played 94 or 95 percent of his games through his career.” However, he confirmed that Zubac’s health takes precedence in this situation. “That’s not going to be an option here,” he added.

As the Pacers prepare for their upcoming games, all eyes will be on Zubac’s recovery. Fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see how he will integrate into the Pacers’ system, especially when Tyrese Haliburton returns next season from his injury.

Stay tuned for further updates on Zubac’s condition and the Pacers’ performance as they navigate this critical juncture in their season.
