UPDATE: A deadly outbreak of mushroom poisoning in California has led to one fatality and 20 hospitalizations, as health officials issue an urgent warning about the dangers of foraging wild mushrooms. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed the tragic incident involved both adults and children, with several patients in intensive care and at least one adult likely requiring a liver transplant.
The health department reported that these cases stem from the consumption of toxic Death Cap mushrooms, which have been linked to severe liver damage. In an official statement released just hours ago, Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer, emphasized the life-threatening risks associated with these mushrooms. “Death cap mushrooms contain potentially deadly toxins that can lead to liver failure,” she warned.
Initial reports indicate that the toxic mushrooms were consumed by individuals who foraged them in areas near oak and hardwood trees, common in California, especially during the fall and winter months. The symptoms of poisoning can manifest between six and 24 hours after consumption, including nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. Notably, patients may feel better temporarily, but lethal liver damage can occur within 48 to 96 hours post-ingestion.
Officials are closely monitoring hospitalizations across the state and revealed that the current numbers only reflect those reported to the California Poison Control System between November 15 and December 5. Significant clusters of cases have been identified in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Area, but the CDPH warns that the risk is ongoing statewide.
Officials strongly advise against foraging wild mushrooms, urging the public to only consume mushrooms purchased from reputable sources. “We advise the public not to forage for wild mushrooms at all during this high-risk season,” Dr. Pan reiterated. Health experts recommend calling the CPCS at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance on potential poisoning.
As the situation develops, authorities continue to urge caution and awareness, as the consequences of consuming these toxic fungi can be devastating. Stay tuned for updates on this urgent health crisis as officials work to prevent further incidents.
