The Ole Miss women’s basketball program has announced the hiring of Danetra Forrest Williams as the special assistant to head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin for the upcoming 2025-26 season. This strategic move aims to enhance the coaching staff and solidify the team’s competitive edge.
In a statement released on Wednesday, McPhee-McCuin expressed her enthusiasm about bringing another Ole Miss alumna into the fold. “I am incredibly excited to have another Ole Miss alumni in the Touhy Building with us,” she said. “Dee is not only an alumna, but a true supporter of Ole Miss women’s basketball. She is also a pro in everything she does! Her impact will be felt immediately throughout our building and in the community.”
Danetra Forrest Williams, a prominent player for Ole Miss from 2005 to 2008, made a significant mark during her college career. She achieved a field goal percentage of 46 percent and averaged 5.5 points along with 3.7 rebounds per game over 93 appearances. Notably, Williams played a key role in leading the Rebels to the Elite Eight during the 2006-07 season, contributing to her legacy within the program.
Following her collegiate career, Williams transitioned to coaching, beginning her journey as an assistant coach at Jones County Community College. There, she helped the Lady Bobcats achieve a commendable record of 19-8 and secure the MACJC Championship. In 2014, she advanced to become the head women’s basketball coach at Coahoma Community College, where she spent three years shaping the program.
The addition of Williams to the coaching staff comes at a crucial time as Ole Miss women’s basketball gears up for an important season. With the offseason underway, the team is focused on building momentum and establishing a strong foundation for the challenges ahead.
As the program continues to evolve, the leadership of McPhee-McCuin and the expertise of Williams are expected to play crucial roles in the team’s strategy and community engagement. Their combined efforts aim to enhance the performance and visibility of Ole Miss women’s basketball in the competitive landscape of collegiate sports.
This hiring marks another step in the ongoing development of Ole Miss basketball as it prepares for the upcoming season, which is poised to be both challenging and exciting for players and fans alike.
