UPDATE: A powerful nor’easter is set to hit New York City and New Jersey with winds up to 50 mph and heavy rainfall, prompting urgent warnings for residents to stay indoors. The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning and wind advisory effective from noon on October 29, 2023, through 6 p.m. on October 30, 2023.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to evacuate basement apartments immediately as officials anticipate significant flooding. With a state of emergency already declared in New Jersey, Gov. Murphy warned of potential power outages, coastal flooding, and beach erosion. The storm is expected to deliver between 1 to 2 inches of rain across the region.

“Strong winds are expected across NYC. Prepare now to stay safe,” the NYC Emergency Management posted on X.com. Authorities advise securing loose outdoor items and closing all windows and doors. They stress the importance of staying indoors during peak gusts, particularly for those living in vulnerable areas.

In a stark reminder of the dangers posed by such storms, the 2021 Tropical Storm Ida resulted in 13 deaths in the five boroughs, with many victims trapped in flooded basements. In response to the impending storm, the MTA has barred empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks from its seven major bridges, including the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Bronx-Whitestone Bridge.

Emergency preparations are in full swing, with Con Edison mobilizing work crews and deploying 900 mutual-aid workers to assist with emergency response efforts.

Residents are reminded to use flashlights instead of candles in case of power outages to minimize fire risks. For non-life-threatening emergencies, such as reporting downed trees, call 311; for life-threatening situations, dial 911.

Stay tuned for further updates as this developing storm approaches and impacts the region.
