The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) has issued a strong statement supporting George Mason University (Mason) and its president, Dr. Gregory Washington. The council is calling on business organizations throughout the Commonwealth to recognize Mason’s vital contribution to workforce development and the economic growth of the region.
In a statement released on July 23, 2025, NVTC highlighted Mason’s longstanding role as a key economic asset for Northern Virginia. “George Mason University has long been one of Northern Virginia’s greatest economic assets due to its transformative impact on the region and significant role in driving talent, research, and economic growth,” the statement asserts. As the largest public university in Virginia, Mason is essential in preparing a workforce capable of meeting the demands of diverse sectors, including technology, cybersecurity, healthcare, law, public policy, and education.
The NVTC’s call to action urges the Mason Board of Visitors to reaffirm its commitment to the university as a crucial regional player and to support Dr. Washington’s strategic vision. The statement emphasizes, “Simply stated, Mason is advancing our regional future.” According to NVTC, more than 80% of Mason graduates choose to remain in Northern Virginia, where they contribute vital skills and leadership across key industries.
Under Dr. Washington’s leadership, Mason has made significant strides in enhancing its research capabilities, forging deeper partnerships with private industries, and expanding opportunities for students from various backgrounds. The university has gained national recognition for its focus on innovation, workforce readiness, inclusive excellence, and hands-on learning experiences.
“Mason is a cornerstone of Northern Virginia’s economic strength, and its students are the future of our workforce,” said Jennifer Taylor, president and CEO of NVTC. She emphasized that Dr. Washington’s vision aligns closely with the needs of the business community, stating, “Collaboration between the private sector and higher education has never been more important.”
The NVTC encourages chambers of commerce, associations, and other business organizations throughout the Commonwealth to support George Mason University in its mission to develop a skilled workforce and foster economic expansion. Organizations that have currently aligned with NVTC’s call for support include the Northern Virginia Chamber (NVC), Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, and Prince William Chamber of Commerce.
