This warning follows an apology from the Royal Blackburn Hospital for long queues in its emergency department. Healthcare officials urge patients to consider alternative services available in the region, including local pharmacies, general practitioners, and urgent treatment centres like the one at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and the minor injuries unit at the Accrington Acorn Centre.
Dr. Linda Charles-Ozuzu, the regional director of commissioning for NHS England in the North West, stated, “The latest data really does confirm our fears that we could be experiencing the worst flu season in recent years.” She highlighted the urgency of receiving the free flu vaccination, especially since the current flu wave has hit the NHS over a month earlier than usual.

In light of this situation, Dr. Paula Cowan, NHS England’s regional medical director for primary care, is urging those eligible to get vaccinated before family gatherings during the festive season. “Every Christmas we see far too many older adults and children admitted to hospital because of flu,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of vaccination as a protective measure.
