UPDATE: A remarkable wave of community support is surging through North Devon following the devastating fire that ravaged a three-storey terrace in Bideford. Just a week after the blaze erupted on October 28 at approximately 8:15 PM, locals have united to assist the 45 evacuees who are still unable to return to their homes.
A GoFundMe campaign launched by local chimney sweep Tobias Kennedy-Matthews has gained traction, raising over £4,000 in just three days to support the East-the-Water Community Food Pantry. This initiative is crucial as many evacuees were forced to flee with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind their possessions.
The ongoing emergency has left some residents homeless, with the exact timeline for their return still uncertain. The incident has prompted a police investigation, with four boys and one girl, aged between 13 and 15, arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. They, along with a man in his 30s, have since been released on police bail as inquiries continue.
In response to the urgent needs of those affected, Vanessa Sanderson, from the food pantry, emphasized the necessity of immediate support. “We opened the doors of our base at Shamwickshire Rovers AFC to provide a safe space, warm drinks, and financial assistance to those impacted,” she stated. Financial aid ranging from £60 to £150 has already been distributed to at least 20 families.
In a show of solidarity, Tobias has temporarily allocated £2,000 from his fundraiser to the food pantry to ensure swift aid delivery while awaiting the full transfer of funds. “Community has always been important to me, and I’m committed to practicing kindness and acceptance,” Tobias remarked, highlighting the speed with which this fundraiser has gained support compared to his earlier efforts.
The community response has been overwhelming, with local businesses and residents stepping up to help. Daniel Lee, another evacuee, made headlines by purchasing supplies for fellow residents, demonstrating the spirit of giving that has emerged in the aftermath of the tragedy.
As fire officials and representatives from Torridge District Council assess the damage, the need for support remains critical. The Royal Hotel at East-the-Water generously provided temporary accommodation for 30 displaced residents on the night of the fire, while efforts are still underway to arrange more long-term housing solutions.
The East-the-Water Community Food Pantry, established in 2021, continues to rely solely on donations and volunteer efforts. Its mission to provide non-judgmental support has resonated deeply within the community, further amplifying the call for assistance in this time of need.
