UPDATE: Norristown has just announced the launch of its Hometown Heroes banner program, set to debut in 2026 and 2027. This initiative will honor local veterans by displaying their stories on banners throughout the town, fostering a deep sense of pride and remembrance as Veterans Day approaches.
Residents are invited to participate in this impactful project, which will feature banners hanging on light poles along key streets, including Main Street and DeKalb Street. Each banner will showcase a veteran’s photo, service branch, and era of service, celebrating the rich military history of Norristown.
Norristown Public Information Officer Kevin Tustin highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “The stories of our veterans deserve to be told.” The program aims to honor more than 160 veterans, including the recently recognized Walter Bartasch, an Army Spc. killed in action during the Vietnam War, whose legacy resonates deeply within the community.
The banners will be displayed from May until Veterans Day each year, serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by local heroes. After their two-year run, the banners will be given to the sponsors as keepsakes for their families.
Each banner costs $135, and the municipality is collaborating with Anne Henning Scheuring, a former Lansdale councilwoman who successfully implemented a similar program in her area. Her experience has helped other communities in Pennsylvania, such as North Wales and Allentown, establish their own Hometown Heroes programs, which have collectively produced over 500 banners.
Residents are urged to share their stories and participate in this heartfelt tribute. Those interested can find more information at norristown.org/683/Hometown-Heroes or visit the Norristown Municipal Hall located at 235 E. Airy St.
As we approach this year’s Veterans Day, the Hometown Heroes banner program offers a unique opportunity for Norristown to come together and honor its local servicemembers. The initiative not only celebrates their sacrifices but also ensures their stories are passed down through generations, reinforcing the town’s commitment to remember those who served.
Get involved now and help honor our heroes.
