UPDATE: The nomination process for the coveted titles of Canine King Boreas and Queen of the Snows is officially open! Dog owners in St. Paul can submit their canine companions for royal consideration starting today, with nominations accepted through January 11, 2026.

This annual contest, part of the 2026 St. Paul Winter Carnival, invites pet enthusiasts to showcase their dogs’ charm, adaptability, and flair for the spotlight. Online voting will kick off on January 12, 2026, allowing the public to select their favorites for these prestigious canine roles.

The winning dogs will be crowned at the Doggie Depot event, taking place on February 1, 2026, at Union Depot in downtown St. Paul. The event promises excitement with a grand crowning ceremony featuring the St. Paul Winter Carnival royal family. However, unlike previous years, the canine royals will not participate in the King Boreas Grande Day Parade on January 24, 2026 due to scheduling conflicts related to the Union Depot’s centennial celebrations.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate our dogs but had to reassess our participation in the parade this year,” said Amy Struve, marketing manager of Union Depot. She emphasized that the focus will be on the Doggie Depot event, which is set to be a lively gathering with local vendors, adoptable dogs, and even dog yoga starting at 9 a.m.!

To enter your dog in this free contest, simply visit uniondepot.org/doggiedepot and submit their photos and information. All nominated dogs will move forward to the voting round, which runs from January 12-25, 2026. The winners will be revealed on January 27, 2026, via Union Depot’s social media channels.

The 2026 Winter Carnival will run from January 22 to February 1, 2026, and will include a variety of events celebrating winter fun. The Doggie Depot event is free to attend and will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on February 1 at Union Depot, located at 214 Fourth St. East, St. Paul.

Last year’s canine royalty, Queen Kairi and King Grover, captivated the community with their social media campaigns and public engagement. Kairi, an American Pit Bull Terrier, is known for her work with Save-A-Bull Rescue, while Grover, a Goldendoodle, won hearts with his playful personality.

Dog lovers are encouraged to participate in this exciting event and share the news with fellow pet enthusiasts. The opportunity to crown the canine royalty of St. Paul is not just a fun contest; it fosters community spirit and celebrates our furry friends who bring joy to our lives.

Don’t miss your chance! Nominate your dog today and prepare for an unforgettable experience at the 2026 St. Paul Winter Carnival. Time is limited—submissions close on January 11, 2026!
