The Philadelphia Eagles are facing significant challenges with their offense, prompting discussions about the future of offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Former Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles has come to Patullo’s defense, suggesting that a minor adjustment in play-calling could lead to improvements.
During a recent episode of “The SZN with Nick Foles & Evan Moore” podcast, Foles proposed that Patullo should return to the coaching box, where he could better assess the defense’s alignment against the Eagles’ offensive strategies. Foles emphasized that this change could help Patullo make more informed decisions during the game.
“I don’t think Kevin needs to be fired,” Foles stated. “I think the answer right now is little micro-changes to make guys more comfortable in their position.” He highlighted that being on the sidelines might cloud a coach’s judgment due to the emotional intensity of the game.
From the coaching box, Foles explained, “You can see the coverages as they’re forming and you can see the defensive alignments very well.” This perspective allows for clearer insights into how the defense is responding to the Eagles’ plays throughout the drive.
In addition to this tactical shift, Foles also recalled the approach of former Eagles coach Andy Reid, currently leading the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Foles, Reid would prepare extensively throughout the week, envisioning each play while reviewing film. “He would have index cards for every single quarter,” Foles noted, suggesting that a similar method might benefit Patullo.
The Eagles’ offense has struggled to find its rhythm this season, ranking 24th in the NFL with an average of 303.6 yards per game as of their recent loss to the Chicago Bears. In that game, the Eagles converted only one-third of their third-down attempts, finishing with just 87 rushing yards. These statistics underscore the pressing need for a solution to their offensive inconsistencies.
Foles’s recommendations come as the Eagles prepare for their next matchup on December 8, 2023, against the Los Angeles Chargers. With time to implement changes, the team hopes to revitalize its performance and regain momentum in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
