In a gripping matchup on October 14, 2023, at Mike Perone Field, Nick Angiolino played a pivotal role in helping the Notre Dame High School varsity boys’ soccer team secure a 2-2 tie against Toms River North. With senior fullback Jayce Palumbo sidelined due to injury, Angiolino transitioned from midfield to bolster the defense as the Irish saw their two-goal lead evaporate in the second half.
The Irish initially took control of the game, establishing a 2-0 advantage before halftime. Senior forward/midfielder Luca Ercolano scored the first goal by converting a midfield pass from senior back Riley Miracola. Just before the break, senior forward/midfielder Kole Feltes extended the lead with a well-placed shot, assisted by junior Felipe Samuel.
Despite the promising start, Toms River North, currently holding a record of 4-6-5, rallied in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Gavin Stryker made a significant impact for the Mariners, stopping a total of 15 shots during the match. His long goal kicks ignited a comeback, with junior forward Manuele Lubrano scoring two minutes after the break. Shortly thereafter, Josh Girtain netted his first varsity goal, leveling the score at 2-2 with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
Angiolino’s tactical switch at halftime proved effective, bringing stability to the defense as he took on a more defensive role. “We were missing Jayce, so we needed to make some adjustments,” Angiolino explained. “I dropped back, and Felipe Samuel moved back into the midfield. I thought it brought confidence to our defense and confidence to our team.”
Despite several attempts to regain the lead, Notre Dame was unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Angiolino reflected on the match, stating, “We had chances. We just didn’t connect.” Junior goalkeeper Anthony Merluse made eight saves, contributing to the Irish’s second tie of the week, following a previous 1-1 draw against Princeton High.
Looking ahead, Angiolino emphasized the importance of learning from the match. “We have to take the rest of this weekend to learn and reflect. I’m really excited about what lies ahead,” he remarked. The Irish face challenging games against West Windsor-Plainsboro South and Steinert in the upcoming week as they prepare for the Colonial Valley Conference Tournament and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Tournament.
With a season record of 11-1-2, Angiolino’s leadership will be crucial as the team navigates the pressures of the playoff season. “As a senior, I feel I have more accountability for the team, especially in a situation like today,” he noted.
The final score stood at Toms River North 2, Notre Dame 2, with goals from Lubrano and Girtain for the Mariners, while Ercolano and Feltes contributed to the Irish’s tally. The match showcased the resilience of both teams, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the season.
