UPDATE: New data from the New York State Department of Transportation reveals a significant surge in travel across New York as the holiday season approaches. Travelers are gearing up for their journeys, utilizing all forms of transportation, from highways to airports.
In Rochester, N.Y., residents like Lisa Jackson are taking proactive measures to ensure their vehicles are ready for winter conditions. “I’m a planner, so I know if I’m traveling, I’ve got to make sure I have everything done so I don’t have to worry about it,” Jackson stated while preparing her car for the road. She emphasizes the importance of vehicle maintenance, scheduling appointments to check tire tread, oil changes, and alignments.
According to Nick Mastrodonato, service manager at Complete Automotive Solutions, “A lot of people are scheduling appointments trying to do their maintenance before they go on trips.” With winter weather on the horizon and lingering effects from the recent government shutdown, travelers are prioritizing vehicle readiness.
Marie Therese Dominguez, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, confirmed that travel is “robust” this season. “We’re definitely recovering from the government shutdown, particularly in the aviation sector,” she noted. Dominguez added that “every mode of transportation” is seeing increased activity as New Yorkers prepare to travel.
As travelers pack their bags, AAA reports millions are planning trips this holiday season, buoyed by falling gas prices. “The trend is still downward,” said Paul Marone of the Repair Shop and Gasoline Dealers Association of New York. He predicts stable holiday fuel prices, making road trips more accessible for families.
“Your car has to be ready for the weather. You can get good gas mileage like that if you prepare ahead,” Marone advised. With many travelers sharing the roads, he encourages everyone to take it easy and drive safely.
As travel ramps up, Dominguez offers practical tips for holiday travelers: “Always plan ahead. Be in touch with your airline, download the app, and keep an eye on the weather because obviously, it’s New York.”
With the holiday travel season just around the corner, the New York State Department of Transportation is committed to making travel as smooth as possible. Officials urge everyone to remain vigilant and stay informed as they embark on their journeys.
