A new generation of young actors is set to breathe life into the iconic characters of the Harry Potter series through a fresh Audible production. The first installment, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” will be released on November 4, 2023. Unlike previous adaptations featuring familiar narrators like Jim Dale and Stephen Fry, this audio version employs a full cast, marking a significant shift in how the beloved stories are shared with fans.

The recording took place in a London studio, where young actors Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester, and Arabella Stanton lent their voices to portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione, respectively. This new adaptation not only brings the characters to life in a vibrant way but also introduces a notable ensemble cast, including Cush Jumbo as the narrator, Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, and Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall. Additional talents include Matthew Macfadyen voicing Voldemort and Keira Knightley appearing as Dolores Umbridge later in the series.

The legacy of Harry Potter has faced challenges, particularly surrounding J.K. Rowling’s controversial remarks on gender and trans rights. Despite this, the production of new projects within the wizarding world continues, showcasing its enduring appeal.

During a recent visit to the studio, the Associated Press captured a glimpse of the youthful trio’s excitement. At just 11 years old, Stanton also stars as Hermione in the upcoming HBO series. She remarked, “I can’t say much, because they’ve cast a Mimblewimble tongue-tying spell on me,” referring to her ongoing filming.

The actors shared their experiences in the studio, highlighting the unique environment they worked in. “I did some audio before, yeah, but nothing as professional as this,” said Lester, age 13. Treadaway, 14, expressed a sense of familiarity with the characters, stating, “I think I relate to them, and I’m sure you guys do as well.”

The studio atmosphere contributed to their enthusiasm. The trio enjoyed access to a snack cupboard that included a “chocolate fridge,” a playful reference to the magical treats from the stories. “They have to restock every time I go,” Treadaway shared, showcasing the camaraderie during the recording sessions.

The young actors recounted their introductions to the Harry Potter universe. Stanton began reading the series at age eight after her friends praised it. “I just worked my way through them and yeah, it was great. I’ve loved Harry Potter. I love it,” she said. Lester discovered the series through a bestseller at a local bookstore, while Treadaway joined in late, hesitating until he turned 12 due to age ratings.

The excitement of the new adaptation is palpable among the cast. Treadaway expressed a keen interest in how the battle scenes will sound, anticipating the cinematic quality of the final product. Stanton is eager to hear the sounds of spells, saying, “I can’t wait to hear all the spells because I think Hermione generally just says so many spells.”

Each actor reflects on their connection to the characters they portray. Treadaway sees parallels between himself and Harry, noting, “Sometimes you’re the smaller person in the room and you just mingle.” Stanton highlighted her love for books as a key connection to Hermione, while Lester identified with Ron’s cheeky nature and loyalty to friends.

The actors also shared their aspirations beyond this project. Stanton expressed her desire to continue acting, saying, “I’d love to act, yeah, definitely.” Lester and Treadaway echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the joy they find in their craft.

As the release date approaches, the young cast remains excited about their roles and the impact of their performances. “It never really felt like pushing yourself to do something, it wasn’t work, it felt like an enjoyable experience,” Treadaway remarked, capturing the essence of their journey in the Harry Potter universe.

With the new audiobook series set to rekindle the love for the wizarding world, fans can look forward to experiencing the magic through the voices of a new generation.
