Researchers have unveiled two new marine species following a research expedition off the west coast of Australia. The expedition, conducted in 2022, led to the identification of a delicate porcelain crab and a small lanternshark, characterized by its large eyes and bioluminescent belly. Scientists collected these specimens at depths of approximately 400 feet and more than 2,000 feet, respectively.
The adult lanternshark measures slightly over 16 inches in length, while the crab, which has a symbiotic relationship with invertebrates known as sea pens, is only about half an inch long. These discoveries are part of a larger effort, with researchers identifying a total of 20 new organisms during the voyage. Among these are deep-sea scale worms, a Carnarvon flapjack octopus, and various deep-living sea stars.

According to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), researchers estimate that as many as 600 new species could still be awaiting discovery from this research cruise.
