UPDATE: The newly acquired ownership group of the Tampa Bay Rays has confirmed immediate plans to repair the hurricane-damaged Tropicana Field and is actively searching for a new stadium site to open by 2029. The acquisition, finalized last week for $1.7 billion from former owner Stu Sternberg, signifies a pivotal moment for the franchise.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Patrick Zalupski, leading the Florida-based ownership group, emphasized the urgency of restoring Tropicana Field after its roof was severely damaged during Hurricane Milton last October. “We need a new ballpark. I don’t think that’s disputed by anyone,” Zalupski stated, highlighting the team’s commitment to remaining in the Tampa Bay area. He assured fans that repairs would be completed in time for the upcoming season, with half of the stadium’s 24 roof panels expected to be installed by the end of this week.

The team is now focused on identifying a new location for a domed ballpark that would include retail shops, bars, and restaurants. “We’re looking at everywhere,” said Ken Babby, the new CEO, addressing concerns about previous site speculations that had led to community fatigue. Possible sites under consideration include the vibrant Ybor City neighborhood and other local landmarks.

Under their current lease with the city of St. Petersburg, the Rays are obligated to play at Tropicana Field for three more seasons. The previous proposal for a $1.3 billion ballpark adjacent to Tropicana was scrapped due to rising costs and hurricane damage, forcing Sternberg to sell the team.

The ownership team also includes Bill Cosgrove, who will serve alongside Zalupski as co-chair, while Babby manages daily operations. Babby’s leadership experience includes overseeing the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Double-A Akron RubberDucks.

Despite competitive success on the field, including American League East titles in 2008, 2010, 2020, and 2021, the Rays have struggled with attendance issues during their time in St. Petersburg. The new ownership aims to change this narrative by building a “sustainable championship team” in a new, fan-friendly environment.

As the search for a new stadium location intensifies, all eyes will be on the Rays’ leadership to deliver on their ambitious promises. The franchise’s future in Tampa Bay hangs in the balance, and local supporters are eager to see how these developments unfold. Stay tuned for further updates as this story progresses.
