The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has implemented a temporary reduction of speed limits to 35 miles per hour across all Interstate and State highways due to severe winter weather conditions. Acting Commissioner Joe Bertoni announced that the restrictions took effect at 12:01 a.m. on January 25, 2026, in anticipation of heavy snowfall, ice, and strong winds throughout the state.

The speed limit adjustment applies to all major highways, including the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, and the Atlantic City Expressway. This proactive measure aims to enhance road safety as winter weather is expected to persist into January 26.

Commercial Vehicle Restrictions Enforced

In addition to the speed limit reductions, a travel restriction has been placed on commercial vehicles, beginning at the same time on January 25. This restriction affects several key highways, including:

– I-76 (entire length)
– I-78 (entire length)
– I-80 (entire length)
– I-195 (entire length)
– I-280 (entire length)
– I-287 (entire length)
– I-295 (entire length)
– I-676 (entire length)

The ban applies to all tractor trailers, empty straight CDL-weighted trucks, passenger vehicles pulling trailers, recreational vehicles, and motorcycles. Notably, this restriction does not extend to the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, or the Atlantic City Expressway.

Emergency personnel and those supporting healthcare facilities are exempt from the travel ban. Trucks already in New Jersey are advised to find truck stops and wait out the storm rather than parking on highway shoulders.
