UPDATE: The beloved Klunders Kafe in New Hampton is set to change ownership in January 2024. Longtime cook and baker Lily Camarillo will take over from current owner Jimmy Klunder, who has operated the café since its inception in 1981. The transition promises to maintain the café’s cherished atmosphere and menu, addressing concerns from loyal patrons.

In a heartfelt announcement made earlier this month, Klunder revealed his family’s decision to sell the iconic restaurant they’ve run for over four decades. “I don’t think there’s a need for any changes,” said Camarillo, reassuring guests that the café will remain as beloved as ever. Klunder echoed this sentiment, stating, “Everything is staying as is, nothing changing food-wise or employees.”

Klunders Kafe first opened its doors on April 15, 1981, in a different location before moving to its current spot in 2007. The café quickly became a local favorite, known for its welcoming environment and delicious food. Klunder’s family, including his wife, Susie, has been actively seeking an exit strategy, as none of their children wish to take over the business.

“This decision was not easy,” Klunder admitted. “We thought it would be best to hand over the reins to someone who already understands our family values.” Camarillo, who has worked at Klunders for 11 years, was seen as the ideal candidate to step into the role.

Camarillo expressed excitement about her new position, stating, “I knew somewhere down the road this is something I would like to do.” She is committed to preserving the café’s family-first atmosphere and has plans to keep the menu unchanged.

While the primary focus will be on continuity, there may be one potential change: extending Saturday hours. Currently, Klunders Kafe closes at 3 p.m. on weekends, but Camarillo hinted at the possibility of staying open later in the future to accommodate customer requests. “We want to make sure we have enough staff willing to work Saturday evenings,” she explained.

As the transition approaches, both Camarillo and Klunder reflected on their time together, emphasizing the importance of the relationships they’ve built over the years. “I’m excited for her,” Klunder said, smiling. “She’s going to do a great job.”

With the sale of Klunders Kafe, patrons can rest assured that their favorite dining spot will remain intact, preserving the cherished traditions and community spirit that have made it a staple in New Hampton. The official changeover is slated for January, making this a pivotal moment for both the café and its loyal customers.
