UPDATE: A new book titled “Swedesburg/Bridgeport … Histories, Stories and Photographs” is making waves as it prepares for a March 2026 release. Author Jack Coll has confirmed that while Swedesburg’s name graces the cover, the spotlight is largely on its neighbor, Bridgeport.

This announcement comes as Coll reveals his dedication to the late Ed Dybicz, a cherished Swedesburg resident and historian who had always urged Coll to explore the stories of their hometowns. “I promised Ed I would give Swedesburg top billing,” Coll explained, ensuring that the small community’s legacy is front and center.

However, the book spans over 500 pages and showcases the rich history of both communities, with more than 700 photographs and captivating anecdotes. “Bridgeport clearly takes center stage,” Coll noted, capturing the essence of its citizens and events.

One of the most riveting chapters recounts the connection between Bridgeport and aviator Charles Lindbergh, detailing how components of his iconic plane, “The Spirit of St. Louis,” were assembled at the former Summerill Tubing Company in Bridgeport. Coll highlights how local workers played a pivotal role in the plane’s creation, linking the community to this monumental moment in aviation history.

Additionally, Coll delves into the darker aspects of Bridgeport’s past, including the infamous strike at the James Lees & Sons Textile Company on October 3, 1934, which Coll dubs “The Most Violent Day in Bridgeport’s History.” His account details the tragic events that unfolded, where a bystander was killed during a labor protest, igniting nationwide strikes in solidarity.

“I want readers to see this as more than just a history book,” Coll states. His narrative intertwines personal stories with historical facts, providing a multidimensional view of life in both towns. Coll’s writing balances factual history with engaging human interest stories, ensuring a relatable and enjoyable read.

The book also features snapshots of community events, local businesses, and significant historical milestones, making it a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and residents alike. “It’s about remembering the past while enjoying the present,” Coll emphasizes.

Coll has previously published two other works focused on Bridgeport, but he asserts this new book will offer far more depth and detail. “I’ve lived in the area for decades, and I want to share the stories that connect us all,” he adds.
