UPDATE: The MTA has just announced significant changes to the R train service aimed at enhancing travel times for Brooklyn-bound riders. Starting immediately, trains will hold at select stations in Lower Manhattan as part of a new dispatch strategy designed to streamline service through Kings County.
MTA officials revealed that this initiative is crucial for reducing wait times, with reports indicating that riders in Brooklyn were experiencing delays of up to two minutes longer than necessary. “If a train is scheduled [to arrive] every six minutes, and customers are waiting ten, that’s not good service,” stated Bill Amarosa, NYC Transit’s head of subways.
Beginning today, the MTA is employing advanced tools to manage train dispatching, including holding trains for brief periods at stations like Whitehall St.. This will ensure a more even flow of service into Brooklyn, particularly for those heading to Bay Ridge and Sunset Park. Amarosa emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent train headways to avoid long gaps in service that have plagued commuters.
Data from NYC Transit has shown that the R train’s on-time performance was below 80% in August, highlighting the urgency behind these changes. By employing a new strategy that balances headways and on-time performance, the MTA aims to improve the overall rider experience. Amarosa noted, “Evening out headways also more evenly divides passengers across trains,” which is essential for keeping trains moving efficiently.
The MTA’s approach is part of a broader shift to prioritize customer experience over traditional operational metrics. Amarosa revealed that since implementing the new dispatch strategy, platform wait times have reportedly decreased by approximately 25%. “This strategy is working to reduce the wait time and get people to where they’re going much faster,” he added.
As the MTA continues to refine this approach, officials are actively exploring similar strategies for other lines, including the No. 6 and J trains. Commuters are encouraged to monitor service updates closely as these changes roll out. The MTA’s commitment to improving service reflects a dedication to enhancing the daily commute for thousands of Brooklyn riders.
Stay tuned for further updates as MTA officials work to ensure that the R train becomes a more reliable option for all passengers heading into Brooklyn.
