UPDATE: A tragic accident has led to the sentencing of a motorist who killed a 33-year-old social worker, Sarah Fensom, after a reckless overtaking maneuver in poor weather. The collision occurred on September 12, 2023, on the A614 Old Rufford Road in Farnsfield, and resulted in Fensom’s death just three days later.

Motorist Lee Horsley, 31, lost control of his highly modified BMW, which boasted an alarming 397 brake horsepower, while trying to overtake in wet conditions. The Nottingham Crown Court heard that the BMW collided head-on with Fensom’s Audi, causing severe injuries including a fractured spine and neck. Despite immediate aid from bystanders and medical personnel, Fensom passed away in hospital.

In court, Horsley pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was sentenced to 15 months in prison. Additionally, he received a driving ban for three years and seven months. This outcome has sparked outrage over the recklessness displayed by Horsley, described by Detective Sergeant Paul Clark of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit as a “true ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing.’”

DS Clark emphasized the severity of Horsley’s driving, stating, “This was a reckless piece of driving that claimed the life of a much-loved daughter and friend to many. Any competent motorist would have adapted to the weather conditions and refrained from such dangerous maneuvers.”

As this case concludes, DS Clark extended his condolences to Fensom’s family, who have exhibited remarkable strength throughout the proceedings. He also urged all drivers to be vigilant: “Adjust your speed and distance to the road conditions and avoid sharp maneuvers, especially in wet weather.”

This case serves as a poignant reminder of the dire consequences of careless driving and the importance of road safety. As the community mourns the loss of a dedicated social worker, the call for responsible driving has reached a new urgency. Authorities continue to advocate for safer road practices to prevent further tragedies.
