UPDATE: Montcalm Community College (MCC) has just announced a remarkable enrollment increase of 16.2% for the fall semester, bringing the total to 2,035 students. This surge, revealed during a board meeting on November 7, 2023, marks the highest growth among Michigan community colleges.

President Bradley Barrick expressed his astonishment at the rebound from the pandemic lows, stating, “It’s mind-blowing.” This enrollment figure stands in stark contrast to the 1,414 students enrolled in fall 2020, representing a staggering 44% increase over three years.

Looking ahead, 1,654 students have already registered for the upcoming spring semester, reflecting a 16.54% increase compared to the same time last year. The college’s total contact hours—vital for state funding—have also risen by 18.83% year-over-year.

The dual enrollment program has played a significant role in this growth, with 704 high school students currently enrolled, up from 664 last spring. Barrick credited Francisco Ramirez, Dean of Student and Enrollment Services, and his team for their hard work in achieving these results.

As MCC approaches its pre-pandemic record of 2,328 students from fall 2009, Barrick stated, “I feel very comfortable about these numbers. Things are going really well for the spring.”

The college is also expanding its outreach to neighboring Ionia County, where Belding High School leads in dual enrollment with 88 students. However, concerns about transportation for students living far from the campus were raised. Barrick assured that options for physical presence in Ionia County are being explored, including potential partnerships with local organizations.

As enrollment continues to trend upward, MCC is committed to meeting the needs of its growing student body. “We are on the front end of those conversations,” Barrick stated regarding the potential for increased accessibility.

This enrollment growth is not just a number—it’s a testament to the resilience of students and staff at Montcalm Community College as they adapt and thrive in a changing educational landscape.
