The 2025 MLB All-Star Game is set to mark a significant return to tradition, as players will wear their respective team uniforms during the Midsummer Classic at Truist Park in Atlanta. This change, announced in September 2024, ends a six-year period in which special All-Star jerseys were used, deviating from the game’s historical aesthetic.

For the first time since 2019, MLB All-Stars will don their primary home and road uniforms, allowing players to represent their “hometown” teams on a prominent international stage. The National League All-Stars will wear their home whites, while the American League All-Stars will showcase their road uniforms. In addition to the traditional uniforms, players will wear special caps that complement the overall look.

All-Star Jerseys Make a Comeback for Other Events

While the All-Star Game itself will see a return to classic uniforms, the special All-Star jerseys are not disappearing entirely. These unique, region-inspired uniforms will be featured during the All-Star Workout Day and the Home Run Derby. The 2025 jerseys are designed with inspiration from the Braves’ retro uniforms, making them a nod to Atlanta’s baseball heritage.

The Home Run Derby, scheduled for July 14, 2025, will see participants wearing jerseys that commemorate the legendary figures of the sport. National League players will sport No. 44 jerseys to honor Hank Aaron, while American League participants will wear No. 3 jerseys in tribute to Babe Ruth. This choice of numbers reflects Ruth’s career home run total of 714 and Aaron’s historic achievement of 715 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

This creative idea originated from Hall of Fame pitcher CC Sabathia, who now serves as a special assistant to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. The initiative aims to celebrate the sport’s history while also engaging fans during the All-Star festivities.

A Look Back at All-Star Uniform Traditions

The last instance of MLB players wearing their primary uniforms during the All-Star Game was in 2019. From 1930 to 2019, players consistently donned their team uniforms, making the years since 2021 a significant departure from this long-standing tradition. The decision to implement special All-Star jerseys began that year but was met with mixed reactions from fans and players alike.

The 2025 All-Star Game promises to blend nostalgia with modern elements, as the league embraces its rich history while continuing to innovate. Fans can expect an exciting celebration of baseball that honors both the players’ roots and the spirit of competition.
