Minnesota United FC secured a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs following a dramatic 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers at Allianz Field on Saturday. Despite trailing due to an own goal in the 80th minute, the Loons rallied late, with Robin Lod scoring the equalizer just five minutes later, ensuring their postseason ambitions remained intact.
The match began somberly, with fans observing a two-minute silence to honor the victims of a recent tragic shooting in Minneapolis. Following the tribute, the crowd sang “You Are My Sunshine,” creating an emotional atmosphere. The first half, however, saw limited action as both sides struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
In the 49th minute, Minnesota came close to taking the lead with two attempts in rapid succession. A shot from Joaquin Pereyra was saved by Portland’s goalkeeper James Pantemis, while Lod’s follow-up struck the post, keeping the score level. The Loons’ fortunes shifted dramatically in the 80th minute when Portland midfielder Antony fired a shot that was deflected by Loons goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. Unfortunately for Minnesota, center back Nico Romero inadvertently redirected the ball into his own net.
As the clock ticked down, it appeared Minnesota would miss out on a crucial victory. However, Wil Trapp provided a spectacular assist, setting up Lod for the equalizer in the 85th minute. The draw left both teams with a point; Minnesota United sits in second place with a record of 14-6-9 and 51 points, while Portland occupies the sixth position with 10-9-8 and 39 points.
The result also required a bit of luck for Minnesota to clinch their playoff berth. The Loons benefited from Colorado’s defeat to Kansas City later that evening, ensuring their spot in the postseason.
Minnesota’s squad featured some new faces, including striker Momo Dieng, who made his debut in the 77th minute after joining from Hartford Athletic. The team is still awaiting work visas for key summer signings, including attacking midfielder Dominik Fitz and defensive midfielder Nectarios Triantis.
The Loons will not play during the upcoming international break, with their next match scheduled against first-place San Diego on September 13, 2023. The team is looking to build momentum as they head into the playoffs, aiming for a deeper run than in previous seasons.
