Milligan University will present the classic play “A Doll’s House” from February 19 to 22, 2024, at the McGlothlin-Street Theatre in the Gregory Center. Showtimes are set for 19:00 on February 19 through 21, followed by a matinee at 14:00 on February 22. All seating is reserved, with tickets priced at $13.50 available at Milligan.tix.com.

The production marks a significant milestone for the university’s theatre program. Frances Saxton, assistant professor of theatre and the production’s artistic director, described it as one of the most challenging plays undertaken by young actors at Milligan. “They have taken on their roles with positivity and grace. I am amazed by their wonderful talents, and I hope you can come out to support them,” Saxton stated.

“A Doll’s House,” originally penned by Henrik Ibsen and adapted by Frank McGuinness, explores the complexities of a young housewife, Nora, and her husband, Torvald. As Nora takes drastic steps to protect Torvald from financial ruin, their relationship faces intense scrutiny, prompting both characters to confront their true selves.

Emotional Depth and Relevant Themes

Directing the production, Saxton chose “A Doll’s House” for its psychological realism and alignment with core Milligan values, including thoughtful engagement, integrity, and community. “This intimate, character-driven play rewards close listening and thoughtful engagement,” Saxton remarked. “Its emotional precision and focus on language create a theatrical experience that resonates strongly with today’s audiences, particularly young people.”

The cast features a talented group of students, including Payton Chambers as Mrs. Linde, Micah Graffius as Krogstad, and Jocely Kain as Nora, the protagonist. Kain, a junior theatre arts and psychology major, has participated in every theatre production at Milligan. She expressed enthusiasm about portraying Nora, whose emotional journey presents a compelling challenge. “My favorite aspect of performing as Nora is that she is very outspoken,” Kain said. “I get to explore so many different nuances in her tone, body language, and expressions.”

Also starring are Isaac Maples as Helmer, Jeremiah Marsh as Dr. Rank, and Rachel Schnatterly as Anne-Marie and Nanny. Each actor brings their unique talents to the stage, contributing to a production that promises to engage and challenge its audience.

Viewer Discretion Advised

While “A Doll’s House” is a celebrated literary work, it addresses mature themes that may not be suitable for younger viewers. The play’s exploration of complex emotional and social issues encourages audiences to reflect on their own life journeys.
