Microsoft is set to enhance its popular productivity tool, PowerToys, with significant updates to the Command Palette module. Initially launched earlier this year, the Command Palette has garnered attention for its potential to boost efficiency on Windows systems. Following feedback regarding its performance, particularly compared to PowerToys Run, Microsoft has addressed speed issues in PowerToys version 0.95, released in October 2023.
The upcoming update, anticipated in the forthcoming PowerToys version 0.97, promises to deliver a major visual upgrade to the Command Palette. One of the notable features introduced in version 0.95 was the Light switch utility, enabling users to toggle between light and dark modes effectively. This utility allows Windows applications, including PowerToys, to adapt automatically according to the selected theme when the app Theme is set to Windows default. Users can also customize PowerToys’ appearance through the General settings page.
Enhancements to the Command Palette will include a dedicated theming feature, as detailed in a GitHub pull request (PR #43505). According to the shared images, users will have the ability to modify the appearance of the Command Palette from its settings page. This update will allow options to select from Dark, Light, and System settings. Additionally, users will be able to choose a background image or color, with controls for blur and brightness effects.
The update will also introduce color tint options and allow users to adjust the intensity of these colors. A significant convenience feature will enable users to easily revert to the original settings with a single click, should they wish to change their preferences later.
With PowerToys version 0.97 expected to arrive later this month, users are eager to access these new capabilities. The enhancements not only aim to improve functionality but also strive to make the Command Palette more visually appealing and user-friendly. Microsoft’s commitment to refining PowerToys reflects its ongoing effort to support productivity on Windows platforms, catering to a wide range of user needs.
As anticipation builds around these updates, many users are hopeful for a timely release, allowing them to experience the improved Command Palette soon.
